To create a bolt cutter rivet tool you will first have to obtain a set of bolt cutters. Generally bolt cutters can be found at almost any hardware store however, Harbor Freight usually has the best price. Handles 18+ inches in length are ideal as they provide more leverage when clamping rivets.

Once you have obtained a set of bolt cutters you will also need a grinding tool. We used a Dremel tool with a cut-off wheel to remove the large chunks. A grinding bit will be needed to perform custom fitting.

The objective is to modify your bolt cutters to look like those shown in the pictures below. One of the jaws should retain a hook shape, while the other needs only a flat base. Should you grind one down too far, you can use a scrap piece of stock with a dimple to compress the rivets. Additionally, you will need to remove metal from the retaining plates on the right and left side of the jaws. Removing the metal will allow you to reach the front trunion rivets on an AK. We had to make several modifications to the jaws before we were able to reach all of the rivets on an AK build. Note: the bolt cutters will not crush the rivets for the trigger guard.
